Heat Wave Preparation
We know that the temperature is due to rise to unprecedented levels over the next couple of days and - understandably - many people are concerned about how this will affect school.
There is no "maximum temperature" specified in law for when it becomes unsafe to work in schools or offices. However, the working environment must be "reasonable" and certainly not put any of the children or adults at risk.
We will therefore be monitoring the temperature across school over the next two days to ensure that everyone is kept safe.
This will include the following measures being introduced during the day to make people as comfortable as possible:
- children to attend school in PE kit/non-uniform if they wish
- parents to provide a sunhat, water bottle and sun cream (applied before school)
- classrooms to be kept as cool as possible by closing blinds, opening windows and using electric fans where available.
- providing shaded areas in the playground by using tarps
- providing PE mats for the children to sit down in the shaded areas
- providing a drinks station in the playground during breaks and lunchtime
- consideration of more frequent / staggered break times or indoor breaks
If the temperature becomes too hot for the children to remain in school we may need to consider further measures such as:
- early finish at lunchtime
- school closure
Obviously we will do our best to avoid this situation and will keep you updated if the situation changes throughout the day.
Many thanks
Mike Lynch
