Maths
At Taxal and Fernilee CE Primary School, we believe that all pupils can achieve success in mathematics. Our aim is to make sure that all pupils leave our school ‘secondary ready’ in mathematics, able to tackle problems competently, confidently and reliably. We want them to be both numerate and to develop useful problem-solving skills.
The programmes of study below outline the mathematical content taught in each year group based on the National Curriculum. We draw upon the guidance provided by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in sequencing and prioritising this content. The following curriculum maps for each year group demonstrate this careful sequencing. Teachers use resources based on the pedagogy and professional development provided by the NCETM and our local maths hub. Teachers design lessons in response to pupils’ needs, providing sufficient practice and providing them with the support they need to achieve.
Mastering Number
We make use of the ‘Mastering Number’ program to ensure children make good progress throughout the mathematics curriculum. In Reception and Key Stage 1, these short additional sessions aim to develop pupils’ number sense. In Year 3, sessions support pupils to have a secure understanding of the additive relationship and to secure addition and related subtraction facts within 20. In Years 4 and 5, sessions support pupils to have a secure understanding of the multiplicative relationship and to secure multiplication and related division facts.
